The 2018 Lucca is a clever blend of 53% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Franc and, for the first time, Cabernet Sauvignon at 10%. The Cabernet Sauvignon provides a strong framework to dangling Cabernet Franc florae and serves as the perfect vehicle for this individual vintage’s characteristics that allowed for the late budding and ripening Cabernet Sauvignon to express valued blackcurrant; not often achieved in our climate.
Matured for 18 months in 80% new French oak barriques, this diligent blend entices the senses with notes of violet, fennel seed and graphite before plunging into a palate dark and dense with prolific layers of polymerized tannins that demand great focus to unwrap. When achieved, a fine balance between earthy salinity and fresh acidity provide an undeniable tension that begs for a deeper exploration into the infinite depths of this effort.
